Three people from Tower Hamlets will be touring the world thanks to fellowships worth £20,000.

Laura Beswick from Bow, Toby Carr from Bethnal Green and Jacob Willson from Whitechapel were given Churchill Fellowships to research solutions to topical global issues.

More than 1,000 people applied for the fellowships, and the three from Tower Hamlets were among 150 who received funding.

Laura will be travelling to the US and Canada to research wellbeing and mental health programmes available for university students, while architect Toby will be leading a sea kayaking exhibition to explore the most northernly points of the shipping forecast.

Jacob is an urban designer, and he’ll be travelling to Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and the US to research zonal planning and its effects on housing affordability.

Fellowships are granted by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, and more than 5,500 have been granted since its inception in 1965. Most last six weeks. The next round of applications opens on April 27.
