A TWO-YEAR campaign to get a bus to stop outside a major supermarket has been won, according to the East End's London Assembly member.

John Biggs said Transport for London had agreed the 488 bus will now stop outside Tesco, situated by the Blackwall Tunnel on the A12 in Bromley-by-Bow.

Two years ago the service replaced the S2 bus route through Bow, popular with many elderly and less mobile residents carrying home their shopping.

The changes meant people had to carry heavy shopping up and down steep subways and through an underpass to a new stop outside Bromley-by-Bow station to catch the bus.

Residents and councillors organised petitions for the old bus service to be reinstated and last year protested outside Bethnal Green's York Hall during a visit from London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Mr Biggs said: "At last TfL have seen sense and the bus will now stop outside the supermarket.

"Although a bus stop seems like a small matter, we wouldn't let go of this campaign."

The Tesco bus stop will be back in operation from February 27.
