HAIR stylist Vidal Sassoon has been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours along with a host of others from East London.
The crimper to showbiz has been awarded a CBE, it was announced at midnight.
Vidal, now 81, grew up in Whitechapel in the heart of the East End and did his hairdresser apprenticeship with Adolph Cohen in the Whitechapel Road.
He was involved in the anti-Fascist 43 Group in the post-War years before his career took off and he became one of London’s trendsetters in the Swinging Sixties, with his multi-million pound hairdressing empire marketing shampoos and conditioners.
KNIGHT TO BISHOP
The Bishop of London and former Bishop of Stepney, the Rt Rev Richard Chartes, has been knighted with his appointment as Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. He served as East London’s popular bishop from 1992 to 1995.
Others in today’s Queen’s Honours include an OBE for award-winning documentary film-maker Jenny Barraclough from Limehouse, whose film about leprosy has been seen by 27 million people worldwide. She has chaired the international leprosy charity Lepra.
An OBE also goes to Dr Elizabeth Sidwell from Leytonstone, chief executive of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation, for services to education, and to Rokhsana Fiaz from Forest Gate, director of the Change Institute, for services to black and minority ethnic people.
PRINCIPAL
A CBE goes to Syeda Begum for services to the Bengali and Somali community in Tower Hamlets. She has been involved with the Jagonari Women’s centre in Whitechapel, Kingsley Hall in Bromley-by-Bow, Brick Lane Youth Development association in Spitalfields and Oxford House centre in Bethnal Green.
Other CBE awards go to Graham Zellick, former principal of London University’s Queen Mary College in Mile End, who went on to chair the Criminal Cases Review Commission, to Tower Hamlets NHS Care Trust chief Alwen Williams, for services to healthcare, and to Nurul Islam from Whitechapel, for services to the East End’s Bengali people.

MBE awards go to Susanne Powlesland from Bethnal Green, for voluntary service to black and ethnic people in East London, to Syeda Begum from Essex, for services to Bengali and Somali People in Tower Hamlets, toBernice Burton from Walthamstow, formerly specialist counsellor in Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia care, for services to the NHS in East London, to Natalia Dawkins of Leyton, for services to vulnerable women in London, to Violet Gostling of Leytonstone, for services to the community in Waltham Forest, to Ian Gray of Manor Park, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health policy officer, for services to public health, to Danny Lafayette from Chingford, knife crime policy adviser at the Home Office, to Sally Trotter from West Ham, former assistant traffic manager, for services to the City of London, and to Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin from Gants Hill, for services to the Jewish community and the Drugsline in North East London.
