This week, parliament debated the Homes Bill, which seeks to introduce new rules which will make it easier for tenants to take legal action against rogue landlords. I welcome the government’s decision to support the bill, although action is long overdue.
The tragedy of Grenfell Tower shone a light on housing issues, and particularly the safety and quality of housing. It demonstrated the terrible consequences of letting these problems go unaddressed. I have received thousands of complaints from constituents relating to poor housing conditions. The government must now act swiftly to improve conditions for renters in both social and private housing.
The government must also act now to overhaul the regulatory system of the social housing sector, so that complaints are dealt with in a transparent way with proper accountability, to ensure that tenants have the proper protection they need and can live in security and safety.
