VOLUNTEERS got stuck in yesterday when the call came to help clear the mud clogging up an ancient pond.
They turned up to clear out the muck and debris from Mill Pond next to the River Lea at Bromley-by-Bow (pictured) to improve the waterways for East London’s thriving wild life.
The mass clean-up organised by Thames 21, the environment charity that keeps London’s waterways from silting up, got rid of litter and helped secure a wooden boom.
The weather turned out worse than expected, with the weekend’s cold snap. The volunteers had to dress warmly under the reflective safety coats they were given.
But they made a day of it with their own packed lunches, finishing up with a nice hot cupper and cake supplied by the charity, knowing they’d done their bit for London’s biodiversity.
