ACTIVISTS in Wapping have decided they want to set up their own town council complete with mayor in a bid to wrest some power from council bosses at Tower Hamlets.
They decided last night that they want to go ahead with the idea - and will have to petition local residents to see if there is enough interest to get the go-ahead.
The town council would represent the ward of St Katharine's and Wapping and would be consulted over planning issues affecting the ward.
It could get involved in issues such as car parking, street cleaning, festivals, litter bins and facilities for young people.
Major decisions affecting Tower Hamlets would still be retained by the borough council based in Mulberry Place however.
Funding would also come from Tower Hamlets council from council tax cash.
