Warning against swimming in East End waterways after reports of people jumping in
The Canal and River Trust are warning against swimming in the East End’s waterways after incidents of people jumping in during the hot weather.
It follows reports of people swimming in Limehouse Basin and Bow Locks, as well Millwall Dock, which the charity is particular worrying as the water there is very deep.
Their spokeswoman Fran Read said: “We don’t want to be party poopers but it’s important people know that there are risks —the canals can conceal a lot of hidden debris and weed, which can trap people underwater or injure them if they jump in. “People are putting themselves at risk of waterborne illnesses such as Weil’s disease and there can be strong currents, particularly around locks and weirs, and in deeper water it can be very cold.”
