Defender says performances have increased belief and admits his frustration at lack of first-team football

West Ham defender James Tomkins has insisted that recent performances have kept morale high despite the club dropping back to the bottom of the table.

The Hammers are unbeaten in four heading into this weekend’s crunch match with Wolves at Molinuex and the centre half is confident about his side’s chances.

“We’ve been getting better and better with each game we have played this season and I am sure the points will come,” he told the East London Advertiser.

“We didn’t get a point for quite a while and we are bottom, but the mood in the dressing room is good because we have been playing well.

“We are in a false position. Our performances have not credited us with where we are right now, we’ve been playing well and not been getting the wins.

“We had chances to beat Stoke. It’s just little things that are stopping us right now and I am sure it will come together in time.”

Tomkins has been out of the team and Carling Cup appearances apart has not played for the Hammers in their opening game 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

He was subsequently dropped and disappointed with his own showing, but is determined to force his way back into Avram Grant’s side and stay there.

“I started the first game but didn’t play as well as I can do and I’m out the team. That’s what it is like because there are other players who can come and take your place if you don’t perform,” he said.

“There are a lot of centre halves at the club. I’m going to train hard and see what what happens. It can be frustrating because I am young and I want to be playing.

“I know there’s the Carling Cup which I have played in which is nice. But obviously I would like a little run and do what I can do.

“I haven’t thought about a loan move really. I’ve just been working hard and trying to impress and prove myself to the gaffer and hope I can get a chance

“It does make you up your game because you want to work hard on what you’re not so good at because you want to get back into the team and when you do get that opportunity you have to take it.”
