Whitechapel mosque opens doors for cake and conversation

A Whitechapel mosque opened its doors to the public on Sunday for Visit My Mosque Day.
East London Mosque, one of Europe’s largest, laid out scones, cakes and a large exhibition in the main hall detailing the place of worship’s history.
The mosque is one of 200 inviting guests to enter and “exchange conversations” as part of the Muslim Council of Britain initiative, said CEO Nozmul Hussain.
“Marking the Visit My Mosque Day, our doors remain open for all members of society to come visit,” he added.
Nozmul said the mosque in Whitechapel Road has often been the target of far-right protests.

The event, meanwhile, passed peacefully, with children from the Eighth East London Scout Group serving lemonade and students reciting passages from the Quran.
“This is a very good opportunity for communities to come together,” said teacher Caroline Stevens.

More than 7,500 worshippers visit the mosque for Friday prayers.
