NEW safety fears have been raised after a woman suffered head injuries after she was involved in a collision with a police car at a notorious East End crossing.

The pedestrian was taken to Whitechapel's Royal London Hospital with non life-threatening head injuries after she was in collision with the marked car on the crossing outside Mile End Underground Station at 8.30pm last Thursday evening.

London Assembly member for City and East John Biggs has now called on Transport for London to deliver on promises to improve the Mile End Road crossroads following a campaign earlier this year.

He said Thursday's incident was the sixth accident at the junction in three years but, although TfL has agreed that improvements are needed, the new design will not be ready until April next year.

Mr Biggs said: "For TfL to take so long in taking action on this extremely dangerous crossing puts Tower Hamlets residents at risk, especially after a string of serious accidents and one fatality."

Junior barrister Vicky Johnson, 23, of Medway Road, Bow, died after she was hit by a car on the crossing in January this year.

Mr Biggs added: "I welcome TfL's promise to redesign the whole junction. However, my concern is that large-scale projects such as this take a lot longer to implement.

"While I am pleased that as a result of our campaign TfL have arrived at this conclusion, the timeline they have proposed does not reflect the urgency of this matter.

"I will be calling on the Mayor and TfL to reconsider the priority they have given to Mile End crossing and will investigate if there are any smaller changes that could be implemented in the mean time to protect pedestrians.
