Hundreds of women inspired by the 2012 Olympics could be getting on their bikes and peddling to east London later this month when Victoria Park is transformed into a two-wheel riding haven.

They are biking along with friends and family to celebrate women’s cycling on September 23.

It’s part of British Cycling’s ‘Breeze in the Park’ programme to get more women onto bikes to celebrate the summer’s ‘golden age of sport’ following the Olympics.

British Cycling’s Natalie Justice said: “London 2012 turned out to be the Women’s Olympics and this deserves a celebration—so we want every woman who’s been inspired by the Games to bring their bike and their kids along.”

Things have come a long way since the first Games in 1896, when all competitors were men, organisers point out. The 2012 Olympics had nearly 5,000 female competitors winning more medals than ever before.

British Cycling’s Breeze network has trained 40 ‘champions’ across London who help build confidence in women novice riders.

Part of that programme is the Sunday mass ride on September 23, between 10am and 1pm, which includes ‘pit stops’ at the Vicky Park lakeside caf.
