WORK has started on the first section of East London's new cycle 'super highway' to the Tower of London from the suburbs of Barking.
It being carried out overnight or outside of peak hours, involving relaying kerbs and pavements, resurfacing roads, erecting signs and installing more bike parking along the 12-mile route.
The first set of works in the East End is expected to take up to three weeks along Cable Street in Shadwell, along Poplar High Street between and along Sorrel Lane in Blackwall.
Transport for London contractors then move further east into Canning Town, Silvertown, Beckton and into Barking, hopefully keeping traffic disruption to a minimum, but with some temporary diversions where necessary.
The first two pilot cycle 'super highway' routes are aimed to be 'on track' by the summer, with the 10 remaining cycle highways planned across London introduced by 2015.
