Two contractors have been announced in a Town Hall deal today to bring 1,300 homes up to scratch in London’s East End.

Contractors Wate’s and Durkan have been signed up by Tower Hamlets Council for the first year of its four-year programme.

They will install kitchens and bathrooms, new front doors and electrical and heating work where needed.

The first 12-month programme concentrates on five large estates in Shadwell, Limehouse, Stepney, Spitalfields and Bow.

Wate’s are already on board as main contractor for the regeneration of Stepney’s massive Ocean estate, one of London’s largest public housing developments now undergoing regeneration. Durkan are a family-owned contractors with nearly 50 years’ experience in London’s social housing.

Work starts next month after consultations with families on the five estates.
