Youngsters braved the wind and rain to build and race their very own go-karts.

Nine teams from across the capital visited Mudchute Farm on Friday to take part in the build and race event.

Organised by London Play, it aims to bring children from disadvantaged communities together for a day of engineering and racing fun.

And the wet weather only added to the excitement as the races saw plenty of crashes - including the self-destruction of the winning team’s kart.

Hackney’s Team Swapa will now be heading to Kent’s Buckmore Park circuit as a reward for their victory, with the prize donated by event sponsors the Henry Surtees Foundation.

Leonora Surtees, managing director of the Kent track, attended the Isle of Dogs event on behalf of the foundation.

She said: “It’s great to see kids from lots of different backgrounds getting involved and having fun; and also thinking that perhaps it might inspire them to do something productive in future, be it in motorsport, carpentry or another discipline.”
