Youngsters from London’s East End have won a place in the 2017 Grand Final of the Jack Petchey ‘Glee Club Challenge’.

The Young And Talented club from Bethnal Green won their east London regional final at Barking’s Broadway theatre.

What impressed the judges was the group of 21 boys and girls aged 11 to 17 performing two medleys they created themselves using music reflecting Brexit, politics and challenging choices.

“There were tears and were blown away at the end,” club founder Suzann McLean said. “The Boot Camp session really helped the team building—now we can’t wait for the grand finals.”

Suzann, who can be seen in the current BUPA advert on TV, started the club in 2004 to give opportunities to youngsters from working family backgrounds.

They rehearse at Bethnal Green’s Oxford House where a regular group of 60 youngsters meet up each week.

The club has entered the Petchey Glee Club Challenge several times and got to the final twice before—but weren’t placed. Now they have a chance for gold.

The Grand Final takes place on Sunday at London’s world-famous Indigo at The O2 Arena, with finalists in with a chance to win a share of £5,000 in prizes. Tickets are £13, available online.
