Preparations are under way for next month’s Cutting East film festival in London’s East End where youngsters have submitted their short films and documentaries or are learning about marketing and programming.

The fourth annual festival opens at Mile End’s Genesis Cinema on March 19.

This youth-led festival looks for the next generation of film programmers and festival curators as “the new voice of cinema”.

Those who live in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets who are aged 13 to 19, or 25 with special educational needs, have been learning from professionals about film festival production including programming, marketing, project management and design—all to lay the foundations for a career in the creative industries.

Sessions take place Thursday evenings and some weekends at Whitechapel’s Brady arts centre.

The festival includes documentaries, music videos, drama, animation, spoken word and dance, up to 10 minutes each.
