Squad among the medals once again
Tower Hamlets boys won a fantastic bronze medal at the London Youth Games indoor cricket finals at Lord’s.
The under-13 team had competed with 32 other London boroughs to be crowned the best team in the capital and qualified for the quarter-finals at Harrow Leisure Centre.
Led by Basit Ahmed, the captain of St Paul’s Way School, they came out of a strong group thanks to some solid team performances to secure their place at Lord’s.
And Tower Hamlets, who had taken silver after losing the 2015 final to Hillingdon, won their quarter-final against Ealing after batting first and posting a very good total of 135-3.
Ahmed and Mahaz Riaz (Swanlea) both retired out after giving their side a strong start and Abutahid Dulal (East London Academy) impressed with the ball as wickets fell at regular intervals and Ealing were dismissed for just 74.
That set up a semi-final meeting with Hounslow and Tower Hamlets batted first once again, but got off to a bad start as they lost captain Ahmed early on.
Tower Hamlets struggled to get any momentum as they kept losing wickets, but still finished with a useful 94 thanks to Rahat Dewan (East London Science School) scoring 30.
Hounslow started their reply very well with a good partnership early on, but Tower Hamlets then took a few wickets to put the pressure on.
But Hounslow kept their cool and managed to reach their target with one over to spare, before losing the final to Redbridge.
