Repton’s record-breaking schoolboy squad face one more hurdle before the national finals, as 13 youngsters from the Bethnal Green brigade head for the Portsmouth semi-finals at the weekend.

With just three of the 16 club hopes eliminated in the schools’ ABA quarter-finals last weekend, they still continue to set new standards as they move towards the national finals in Liverpool on March 2/3.

They know there will be some tough tests at the Charles Dickens Centre in Portsmouth – the scene of the semi-finals – with some strong rivals including members of Reading’s powerful Pinewood Star club in opposition.

But there was no doubting the form of the Repton hopes at the TA Centre Grove Park, south London on Saturday, including two previous national champions – Michael Oates and Levi Lee – who turned back the challenge of the Tindall brothers from St Mary’s club, Kent.

Lee featured in a thrilling clash with Kallum Tindall as his more effective attacks built up a good lead in the opening rounds and although his rival rallied in the final stages, the Repton boxer was good value for the unanimous points win in the Class Three 38kg clash.

All-action Oats poured on the punches against younger brother Joey Tindall in the Class Two 34kg quarter-final and moved through by a unanimous decision from the judges.

Again impressing at the south London tournament were Repton’s youngest hopes in the Class One section, sparkling as they all moved through to the semi-finals.

John Lee and Adam Hussain maintained their unbeaten progress, defeating rivals from the Farnham BC at the weekend.

Lee’s 30kg clash with Brian Saunders paired two promising youngsters, but it was the Repton boxer producing the more effective attacks that took the unanimous points vote.

Hussain also provided the more scoring shots from the opening bell as he dominated his 32kg quarter-final with Henry Collins, and came through a good winner.

Rakim Tatou is another undefeated prospect in Repton colours and it stayed that way as he eliminated Westhill’s Neil Lucas in the 34kg encounter.

Jesse Beck outscored Hughie Docherty from the Mole Valley BC Hampshire in a 38kg duel, while Henry Turner defeated another member of the Docherty clan – Thomas – at 42kg.

Jamal Khan joined the Bethnal Green club’s victory march when he proved superior to Sporting Ring rival Lee Cole at 40kg. Also winning was Levi Coates in a Class Three 40kg encounter with Guildford rival Jamie Lee, with Repton’s 2011 national champion slamming home the shots for a unanimous verdict.

Their success was backed up by walkover victories for Paddy Ward, Ben Gentle, Jessie Dean Harris and Tommy Ball.

However, there were disappointments for Repton with the close majority verdicts going against John Doran, Johnny Hanrahan and Tyrane Wynter.

Shiloh Defreitas from the Smallholding BC took the tight verdict against Doran, while Mark Chamberlain from the Team Wiseman club took the decision over Hanrahan.

Wynter was also the victim of a very close call when the points were in the balance against Ryan Garner (Southampton) in a clash of 2012 national champions.

? Another national champion going out at the quarter-finals was West Ham’s Sidney Driscoll, who lost a split verdict against Guildford’s MIchael Chalk in a controversial contest affected by a timekeeping dispute.
