Referee Mik Basi isaiming to continue his rise up the international boxing ladder at the World Senior Amateur International Championships

Referee Mik Basi flies to Milan tomorrow aiming to continue his rise up the international boxing ladder at the World Senior Amateur International Championships.

The East London official will be one of the leading referee/judges controlling the contests when the world's best amateur boxers compete for glory in Italy from September 1.

It is the latest step in a globetrotting career that has seen Basi officiate in Mexico and Moscow during the past 12 months.

And the 43-year-old official has vowed to continue travelling around the world in an effort to earn a call-up to officiate at the 2012 Olympics.

"To be named as an official when the Olympic Games are held in the borough where I grew up would be nothing short of fantastic," Basi said.

The official, who graduated from working at local tournaments all over East London, is looking forward to his first senior world championships after making his mark at last year's World Youth Championships in Mexico, where Basi was voted top official at the tournament.

He followed with an appointment at another AIBA tournament staged in Moscow before receiving the call to officiate at next week's World Senior Championships.

Basi has made the grade alongside older brother Jumbo, who is also an international referee and is a stalwart of the Fairbairn BC, formerly based in Plaistow but now located in Connaught Lane, Ilford.
