Archant London sports reporter and former London Raiders forward Jacob Ranson is guesting for Algerian side HC Alger Corsaires at the 2018 Arab Cup in Abu Dhabi and writing a blog about the experience.

Day 3:

Today was an interesting one as I headed to the famous Sheikh Zayed just after breakfast and I can see exactly why it’s a wonder of the world.

Wow. It was definitely something to see. The architecture detail was amazing, it was such an experience.

It was extremely traditional and shoes had to be taken off before heading round the Sheikh.

After going the whole way round I opted to head back to the hotel to sit by the pool for a few hours before heading off for a team lunch.

Mealtime conversation was mainly spoken in French as the predominant language of most my team-mates for the week.

But any important announcements were then translated into English for the few English-speaking members on the team.

We then got on the bus and headed for the rink to be there two hours before our game, where we had a meeting and warmed up in the boiling sun.

It was soon game time and we skated out with the Algerian flag on our shoulders.

I took the shirt number 15 for the match and I thought we got off to a good start, racing down the wing on my first shift and almost finding the net.

Team Lebanon then showed what a good side they were as they started to pick up the pace.

Their team was made up of mainly ex-pat Canadians from Montreal and Toronto and it showed as they moved the puck well and ended up beating us 16-3 in the opening game.

After the match we stayed in our kit and had an opening ceremony for the tournament where we had to respect the UAE national anthem and skate out as a team to introduce ourselves.

We then sat down as a team and watched the start of the next match.

Abu Dhabi looked another real threat in that match and that’s who we take on today.
