Darren Bruce took on the 'ultimate test of strength and endurance' when he competed in the World's Toughest Mudder last month - and he's ruled out putting his body through the torment again.

The fitness instructor at the Reebok Sports Club in Canary Wharf made up one quarter of the team Three Vikings and a Brother with Scandinavians Peter Lund, Klaus Oestergaard and Peter Fejfer.

It’s a gruelling 24-hour, five-mile obstacle course designed to discover the toughest men, women and teams. Bruce and his team came fourth out of 40.

“Peter and Klaus are both friends and clients, and they convinced me to join their team this year,” said Bruce. “The race was very hard, brutal in fact, and really cold, but we trained very hard for three and a half months beforehand and that paid off.

“A couple of days after we were a little deflated because we thought we could finish higher. But at one point we were 22nd, so to come fourth was a pretty good achievement so I don’t think I’ll do it again.

“We were the second strongest team between 5pm and 5am when it got tough overnight.”

Bruce, who lives in Langford Hills, Essex, headed to New Jersey in America for the obstacle course. He first took on a Tough Mudder in Northampton last year, but admits this was a whole other level.

The 40-year-old said: “The Northampton race was very tough as we hadn’t trained that hard and I said never again, but we came in the top five per cent and qualified for the World’s Toughest Mudder.

“Again Klaus, who had decided to take a year sabbatical needed something to focus on, persuaded me to do it. This time it’s definitely never again!”

And does he have any advice for anyone who’s looking to take on one of the toughest physical challenges on the planet?

“My advice to anyone looking to do it is you have to prepare the body and the mind,” said Bruce.

“You have to be mentally strong and it’s good to do it as part of a team so you’re not alone.”
