Hackney’s Reuben Arthur joined forces with Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey as the men won in 38.13 seconds ahead of South African and Jamaica.

And Newham & Essex Beagles Asha Philip combined with Bromley’s Dina Asher-Smith, former UEL student Bianca Williams and Thames Valley Harriers Lorraine Ugen as the women ran a national record of 42.46 to pip Jamaica and Nigeria.

Philip, an Olympic bronze and World silver medalist in the event, had finished fourth in her 100m final and said: “We usually compete before the boys, but they competed before us and won gold, so we thought we had better not embarrass ourselves.”

Long jumper Ugen, who finished fourth in her specialist event, came into the side at short notice to replace the injured UEL student Corinne Humphries, and said: “I found out yesterday I was on the team. I did my first exchanges in the warm-up track.

“I didn’t feel too nervous and I was only going to do it if I felt I was capable of doing the job.

“They gave me a really big lead and all I had to do was hold it. The last time I did a relay was at University a few years ago.”

The England women’s 4x400m squad, with Newham & Essex Beagles Finette Agyapong and Bow’s Perri Shakes-Drayton were pipped to bronze in the home straight by Botswana.

And the men, who included Newham & Essex Beagles Rabah Yousif, had missed out on a place in their final when Matt Hudson-Smith pulled up with a hamstring injury on the first leg of their heat.
