London-based coach Born Barikor is leading the way in keeping Londoners active, with his Our Parks initiative happening across the capital.

Our Parks brings free group exercise classes – led by experienced and qualified instructors, to parks across London, working in partnership with Councils and Local Authorities.

The aim of Our Parks is to encourage physical activity in local communities that is easily accessible, using a simple booking system and helps to provide a fitter and socially active community.

This week marks European Week of Sport, an initiative generated by the European Commission to encourage increased activity and get people moving, regardless of age, background or fitness levels.

A Eurobarometer report on sport and physical activity across Europe shows that the main motivations for participation in sport or physical activity are improved health (54%) and fitness (47%). Lack of time (40%) is the principal barrier.

UK Coaching research from 2017 has shown that 82% of people being coached agree that the coaching they receive helps to improve their mental health and participants’ experiences of coaching include motivations to do better, encouragement to come back and support to achieve individual goals.

It is clear however, that there is an abundance of coaching taking place in projects such as Our Parks, with there being nearly fourteen million adults in the UK that have coached sport or physical activity at some point in their lifetime.

Born Barikor, Founder of Our Parks, believes that coaching is the foundation of physical activity and helps to encourage an active nation.

“If you have the right coaching in place, then you will want to come back for more and stay engaged,” Barikor said.

“But it needs to be accessible, and that is what we are trying to do at Our Parks – make it easy for people to be active, and have fun whilst doing it.”

UK Coaching believes that coaching is all about coaching the person in front of you and that adopting a person-centred approach to great coaching enables others to experience the broader holistic benefits of coaching.
