If the London Marathon has inspired you to pull on your trainers and join the running boom that’s sweeping the country, you don’t need to go very far, as the next big event is right on Newham’s doorstep.

A total of 39,487 people toed the start line at Sunday’s London Marathon, with hundreds of thousands more lining the capital’s streets to cheer runners on.

For one day only, the carnival of running was open to everyone, but you don’t have to wait until next year to get involved – in just 10 weeks the London Stadium plays host to the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run 10km and 2km Family Run.

Taking over Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on July 2 before heading inside the stadium for a once-in-a-lifetime finish on the iconic athletics track, the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run is the perfect way to join the borough’s booming running community, just like Newham resident Stella Boahmah did.

The very same track will play host to the greatest athletics talent on the planet at the 2017 World ParaAthletics and Athletics Championships just weeks after the Newham 10k. More than 15,000 runners will warm up the track for the mighty Sir Mo Farah and Usain Bolt to both run their last races before hanging up their spikes.

You can feel that finish line high too and join the thriving community of runners across the borough that make Newham the beating heart of the East London running boom.

Whether leading up to half or full marathon distance or building to your first 10km, it’s never too late to start, and with free weekly training sessions at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park such as the Great Run Local 2km and 5km events every Sunday morning, you’ll have plenty of motivation to keep going.

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said: “Thousands of runners will have taken to the streets for the London Marathon and for those who crossed the finish line, it’s a great achievement.

“For some, the thought of running 26 miles is daunting and that’s why the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run is a fantastic way to build your mileage and fitness.

“The event takes in fantastic views around the Olympic Park and will see runners cross the same finish line as Olympic greats such as Usain Bolt and Jessica Ennis-Hill, and I hope it’ll help to inspire a love of running and some new world class athletes too.”

Former Olympian Brendan Foster, chairman of the Great Run Company, added: “Running has never been so popular in London, and we’ve seen such incredible growth for our flagship London event in Newham.

“The stadium finish offers runners the ultimate finish line high, a truly unforgettable experience and real sense of personal achievement.”

If inspired entries are now open for the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run 10km or 2km Family Run on July 2 at the London Stadium.
