VICTORIA Park and Tower Hamlets athletics club's Paul Martelletti won the final Assembly League race of the season last week but the club were pipped for the men's title by a single point.

Martelletti, who finished as the top male runner overall, set a new course record for the 2.9mile race in Beckenham, while team-mate Richard Hope came home in third place, but Victoria Park failed to overhaul the Stock Exchange for the team prize.

The club did win the men's B team award by four points, with the Stock Exchange team in second place.

Meanwhile, Hope secured victory for the club at the London Heathside Open 5km run last week.

Hope, who was Victoria Park's sole representative at the race, came home in 15mins 33.1secs - over a minute ahead of his nearest rival Roman Breen.
