Teenage gymnast wins Canary Wharf sports gong

Teenage gymnast Tyesha Mattis was crowned Canary Wharf Sports Peronsality of the Year at a glittering ceremony.

The 14-year-old travelled to Liverpool for the British Championships in March last year, where she became junior British champion, placing first, second and third in the vault, beam and floor finals.

Tyesha also enjoyed success at two international events as she excelled in 2013.

She competed for Britain at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, being part of the team that finished second to China.

Individually, Tyesha won the all-around and vault competitions and also got bronze medals for bars and floor.

And in the European Youth Olympic Festival, in Utrecht, Holland, she won a team silver, two bronzes in the all-around and vault to go with a fifth-placed finish on bars.

The ceremony, held at East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf, saw a number of other awards handed out.

Cheerleading squad Ascension Eagles Prophecy were named junior team of the year, after winning a number of titles despite only being formed at the end of 2012.

Football team FC Bartlett, who play in the Hackney and Leyton Senior Football League, won the senior team gong. They won the Albert Daniels League Cup last season.

And Tower Hamlets BMX Club claimed the group achievement award, with the group reaching over 1,000 young people in the area.
