Barking Abbey London Lions ended their wait for a first league win with as a strong finish helped secure an 82-74 triumph on the road at Team Northumbria.

Career-high performances from two academy players proved key as Lions edned a run of 17 consecutive defeats on the penultimate weekend of the regular season.

Flora Durgerian had 15 points and Megan Sheret added 12, while Christina Gaskin scored 14 as Abbey put together an 11-2 spell to take control from behind and they were able to close out the win down the stretch.

“I’m incredibly pleased to get the first win in the WBBL,” said head coach Mark Clark.

“After the win against Oaklands in the trophy, it gave us a little bit of confidence along with the good performance against Sevenoaks.

“I suppose we could fall back on the ‘we do this for development’ and everything else, but there’s nothing like getting a win against a good team like Northumbria.

“Everything we try to do here; with Flora going five of eight from the three, and Megan with a crucial four points to ice the game, good contributions from Megan and Zoe; it’s about us being the academy and giving an opportunity for young players to play.

“When you have a season like ours, it’s crucial you have a group of people working with these players that stay positive and always trying to find ways to get better and find ways to win.

“It’s a big positive shout to everybody on the staff as well, we could have easily thrown in the towel. We’ve got a tough weekend ahead with Cardiff and Nottingham, so who knows, maybe we can finish the season 3-0.”

Abbey host Cardiff on Saturday (4.30pm) and visit Nottingham on Sunday (4pm) to complete the campaign.
