London Lions have announced that Mariusz Karol has stepped down as head coach in mutual agreement with team management.

Karol led the Lions to success at the Betway All Star Season Opener at the O2 Arena and was named Molten BBL coach of the month in November.

But Lions have lost four of their six games since and Karol has moved on, to be replaced by director of basketball Vince Macaulay.

Previously head coach three years ago, Macaulay led the Lions to the play-off final at the O2 Arena and will steer the side until the end of the current campaign.

Karol said: “I am disappointed in the results in the last month. I would’ve liked to have continued to prove muself til the end of the season but I understand this team was put together to win and I haven’t achieved the goals set by the club for the season.

“I wish the guys and the club all the best for the season and every success in the future.”

Macaulay added: “We all know the demands of BBL basketball have increased immensely, it’s all-hands-on-deck now.

“We will do everything we can to turn the season around. I have every faith in the team Mariusz has put together and the club would like to thank him for all his hard work.

“He is a fantastic guy and a talented coach. We are very sorry it didn’t work out, sometimes the circumstances aren’t right.

“I have every faith that Mariusz will go on to achieve big things in the future.”

Lions are set to welcome Sheffield Sharks to the Copper Box Arena on Sunday (4pm). See ticketmaster.co.uk for tickets.
