Tower Hamlets Boys were crowned London Youth Games Cricket Cup champions after a crushing 55-run win over Redbridge at Lord's

Tower Hamlets Boys were crowned London Youth Games Cricket Cup champions on Saturday after a crushing 55-run win over Redbridge at Lord's.

The Tower Hamlets team overcame fellow borough's Hillingdon and Hounslow to reach the final of the six-a-side Under-14s competition, which took place at the Lord's Indoor School used by England stars Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen.

A dominant performance with the bat laid the platform for a convincing win in the final as Tower Hamlets made 100 for four from their 10 overs.

Some exceptional fielding - including a stunning diving catch at leg slip - then saw Redbridge

dismissed for just 45 as Tower Hamlets claimed the title in style.

Tower Hamlets coach Jack Ford and Chris Willetts, the borough's school sport chief, were delighted with the team's triumph, while also praising a battling display from the girls' side, who were narrowly beaten by reigning champions Merton in the quarter-finals.

"We're proud of how both teams performed today at Lord's," said Willetts. "The boys performed really well today and there were some great performances throughout the games. We'll be back next year to defend our trophy."

Current Sussex all-rounder and ex-London Youth Games competitor Rory Hamilton Brown came back to witness the finals and handed out the medals to the top three boroughs.

Speaking after the finals, he also praised the triumphant Tower Hamlets squad for lifting the championship.

"Congratulations to Tower Hamlets. It is great to come back to an event that I played in and one which helped my development as a player," Hamilton Brown said.

"I thought the standard of cricket was superb and I'm delighted to see how boys' and girls' cricket has continued to grow at the Games."

The Tower Hamlets boys' side was led by Stepney Green quartet Masud Ahmed, Sazidur Rahman, Afjal Hussain and Layek Harim, while St Paul's Way contributed three players in Akram Khan, Rahi Robiul and Panna Hussain.

Swanlea's Shaykul Hoque, Morpeth pupil Habib Ali Chowdhury and Jogrul Ahmed, from Langdon Park, completed the line-up.

The borough's girls' side was dominated by Bishop Challoner foursome Merci Brown, Brandi James, Mary Williams Greenward and Nermeen Hilton, with Landon Park represented by trio Nishaat Khanom, Jessica James and Pinar Yagnur. Georga Beney was the lone St Paul's Way pupil in the side.

A record 600 young cricketers from 30 boroughs competed in the 2009 Cricket Cup, which was first introduced in 1996.
