The latest news from the local boxing scene

Light heavyweight Anthony Yarde has promised a special night for his growing band of fans when he heads the bill on the Queensberry Promotions show at a packed York Hall on Saturday night.

The Peacock gym power-puncher, already hailed as one of British boxing’s most explosive prospects with 13 stoppages in his 14 straight victories, aims to improve when he defends his WBO Inter-Continental and European titles against tough Frenchman Tony Averlant.

“I am planning on being better, faster sharper and having a better defence,” promises the 26-year-old with world title ambitions who appears alongside another big hitting hope from the east London gym, Daniel Dubois.

None of ‘Dynamite’ Dubiois’ six victims have lasted more than two rounds, but his opponent, Kent heavyweight DL Jones, vows to test the stamina of his rival in their Southern Area title clash on Saturday.

“Daniel is avoided because he hits like a train, but he’s never been past two rounds whereas I’ve completed eight at a high pace. Let’s see what sort of engine he’s got,” said ex-soldier Jones, unbeaten in nine pro bouts.

Three other bright prospects under promoter Frank Warren’s banner — Umar Sadiq, Harvey Horne and Hamzah Sheeraz — face their second pro tests on a bill which will be screened live on BT Sport and BoxNation.
