Bow teenager Tony Buttigieg has been fired up for his next fight by watching an interview with his opponent on You Tube.

The 19-year-old is matched with Chris Adaway at the York Hall show on Saturday, and the fight presents a significant step up in class.

Adaway is a hardened scrapper from Plymouth who has caused upsets before and Buttigieg said: “I watched an interview with him on You Tube and he was saying: ‘I don’t care who I fight, I just get in there and fight.’

“Knowing that gives me extra motivation.

“That got me excited. I can’t wait to get in there and put on a show. I’m counting down the days, the hours, the minutes.

“I know this fighter is much better than my previous two opponents and that’s what I want. I know most prospects don’t fight Adaway until their seventh or eighth fight and I’m taking him on in my third.

“I don’t want to be fighting lots of journeymen. Some fighters need to fight 10 or 20 journeymen at the start of their pro careers, but I don’t think I do.

“It will take time to settle into the pros, but I’m getting there and with the people I’m sparring around in the gym every day, I’m improving all the time.

“I’ve got people like Larry Ekundayo and Siar Ozgul around me and I’m learning from them every day. If you surround yourself with champions, you find out what it takes to be a champion and I’m going to become one myself.

“I’ve got a very good coach in Barry Smith and a very good manager in Mickey Helliet and I can feel my career is in good hands”

Buttigieg could also find himself fighting for a belt soon enough.

He added: “I was hoping to fight for a Challenge belt on this show. That didn’t come off this time, but hopefully that will happen soon.”

The top-of-the-bill contest at the York Hall this weekend features north Londoner Tony Milch, who has won all 13 of his professional fights to date, against Essex rival Matt McCarthy, who has one loss in 18, for the vacant Southern Area super-welterweight title.
