Wadi Camacho upset the odds to claim the biggest win of his career at York Hall as he took the Commonwealth cruiserweight belt.

A seventh-round win over Derby’s Arfan Iqbal saw the 33-year-old Camacho avenge a four-round loss last year and shatter any idea of his career being finished.

“There’s more to come – watch this space. I gave everybody a little glimpse of what I can do,” said Camacho, whose only regret was not by winning via knockout, as Iqbal tumbled through the ropes and suffered a back injury.

With the 26-year-old unable to continue, the judges scorecards were tallied and the dominant Camacho was declared a unanimous winner by a 69-63, 69-63, 68-64 margin.

Iqbal’s fans showed their anger, claiming their man had been fouled with a protest that saw a metal ringside sign tossed into the ring before secutrity moved in.

But home fans believed Camacho had earned his revenge against a previously unbeaten rival in a scrambling contest, which saw both fighters warned by referee Marcus McDonnell for illegal tactics.

There was disappointment for another local title hope on the Goodwin bill, though, as Ryan Walker failed in his bid for the English super-bantamweight title, losing in the opening round.

Veteran Michael Ramabeletsa, 36, landed first-round rights for two knockdowns as the contest was halted after just two minutes and five seconds and Walker suffered a first defeat after eight wins.

The Goodwin group are back at Bethnal Green’s York Hall on Saturday with a 20-bout bill.
