Dean gets surprise title shot

Rocky Dean will have another chance to lift the British super-bantamweight title when he faces Jason Booth at York Hall

Crowd-pleasing super-bantamweight Rocky Dean will have another chance to lift the British crown when he faces Nottingham titleholder Jason Booth at York Hall next month.

The title clash will be the headline fight on promoter Frank Maloney's show on June 26 and comes eight months after the Peacock Gym-trained Dean challenged his local rival Matthew Marsh for the same title at the same venue.

Dean, 30, lost a razor-thin verdict after 12 tough rounds last November - despite one of the ringside judges, Ian John Lewis, scoring the pair level at 114 points each.

Former West Ham amateur star Marsh, who was based at East London's rival TKO gym, was due to defend his title against Liverpool's Mark Moran in April.

But champion Marsh made a sudden decision to retire from the ring and pulled out days before the scheduled contest.

Veteran Booth stepped in as a late replacement and caused a huge upset by stopping Moran with a cut eye in six rounds.

Now the 31-year-old Nottingham fighter, who launched his own pro career back in 1996, returns to York Hall to make the first defence of his title against Marsh's old rival.
