Dockers hit for six by rampant Repton boxers

PUBLISHED: 14:00 04 April 2013

There was six-hit success for Repton boxers on their latest visit to Northern Ireland, as they took on a select squad on the Belfast Dockers Club tournament and romped to a 6-0 team triumph, writes Len Whaley.

The east London squad had to battle through blizzard conditions in snow-hit Belfast, but once the action started they were too hot for the home boxers.

Repton were without their top names from the recent ABA championship chase, but included bright heavyweight prospect Lawrence Okoele who piled up the points with his long-range jab against Belfast rival Charlie Devaney.

Devaney scored with a close-range barrage in an attempt to turn the bout his way, but it was the tall Repton boxer who landed the scoring shots to clinch a well-deserved points verdict.

Tommy Tear was another winner for the Bethnal Green brigade, slamming home the effective attacks, including a powerful last-round barrage to make sure of the the verdict against Petru Ursu.

Steve Addison showed the power to shake rival Les Docherty as the pair swapped toe-to-toe punches in their opening round, and followed up landing more powerful shots in the second, when the referee moved in to rescue the Irish boxer.

Broad Street Stepney club boxer Karl Ozimkowski, who went out of the ABA title race after a tough tussle with West Ham’s bright prospect Luke Saunders, was in winning form as a guest in the Repton team.

The seasoned international campaigner maintained his usual pressure-punching attacks, scoring with powerful shots to the head and body against Belfast Dockers’ James McDonagh on his way to a points victory.

Joining the Repton win parade was Jordan Blake, who found the target with effective attacks against Chris Forward to make sure of another points win for the visiting squad.

Bobby Foreman and Belfast Dockers’ rival Pearce Knocker also entertained the Belfast audience as they traded toe-to-toe punches in their keenly fought encounter with Repton boxer Foreman coming out on top at the final bell.
