Colin McMillan is looking forward to making the dinner show he has arranged for his old club, Barking BC, a special night on Friday October 9 at Chigwell’s Prince Regent Hotel.

The former world featherweight champion can remember his own special nights during his ring career 20 years ago with packed arenas and a live television audience of millions watching the action.

It will obviously be smaller scale next week, but McMillan plans a night to remember for the fans with top boxing personalities at the evening.

They include Michael Watson, Herol Graham and from the current scene local favourite and three-time world title challenger Kevin Mitchell at ringside.

Showbusiness celebrities will also be at the dinner, an annual event with the money raised going towards Barking Boxing club and named good causes.

Barking are clearly grateful for McMillan’s efforts and chief coach Dave Sadler said: “Colin arranges the annual show and the cash raised on the night keeps us going throughout the year.”

Home boxers have been matched with local rivals, with popular brothers Blerim and Jetnor Pjetri booked for contests.

Recent recruits at the gym to show promise, including Mudrik Abdul-Kadier, go into action as the prospects face rivals from clubs including Hornchurch, Gator and Broad Street Stepney.

Other area clubs sending boxers to the event include Canning Town’s successful Peacock BC and welterweight Claudio Paulo is booked for an amateur farewell before joining the pro ranks.

“Plans are going well for the dinner show and we hope to make it a special night for the fans, with some top class boxing and a charity auction,” said McMillan.

*Dagenham lightweight Eddie Hussein made it seven fights unbeaten with a points victory over Leicester’s Alex Phillips in the curtain raising contest at the big Wembley bill on Saturday.

It was a tight call as the official scorecard showed Hussein as just a single point winner, 57-56, after a close contest.

The Dagenham boxer landed the more accurate punches, but lost a point when his body punching was ruled below the belt.

Hussein’s win on Saturday at 5pm started the show, topped by super-middleweight Frank Buglioni’s points defeat against WBA world champion Fedor Chudinov.

At the other end of the show Billy Long, a super-middleweight at Dagenham’s Legends gym, scored his second pro win as he outpointed Plymouth rival Christian Gomez – just before 2am on Sunday morning!

*Dagenham boxers Marvin Lombi, Dan Landy, Adrian Lionel and Dennis Dagiliss were due to weigh in at the West Ham BC gym this week for the England Senior Developement championships.

The novices championships start with preliminaries today (Thursday) and NE London finals the following day – at the Waltham Forest gym or possibly Friday’s Repton BC show at the East Ham WMC.

The chase continues with London semi finals on Saturday and finals the following day – both at the TA Centre, Baring Road, Grove Park, Lewisham.
