Bethnal Green club celebrate more success

There was golden delight for Repton in Sweden as they took top honours against international opposition in the Kings of the Ring tournament in Boras.

The Bethnal green club’s haul also included two Best Boxer awards, after Tommy Roberts impressed to claim the best youth prize following his fine win over a French national champion to clinch his gold award.

Henry Turner was confirmed as the best junior and also took a showmanship award after winning gold with victories on successive days.

Also recording a double success and bringing home a gold award was Alston Ryan, while two good wins on successive days saw Nathan Harris claim another gold.

Miley Chalk’s win over an Irish title-holder earned another gold, while Arnold Obodai boxed on three consecutive days and narrowly missed out on gold as he suffered a final defeat.

A split decision saw Richard Mansende exit at the semi-final stage, whiel Billy Beer won his opening bout but also lost in a semi-final.

Chaves Cambell was awarded a decision that was later reversed and there were disappointing exits for George Smith and Sonny Hunt, who won his opening bout but withdrew through injury.

Back home, Repton boxers moved through the NABGC semi-finals at Harlow on Sunday to reach finals at various venues this week.

Class A 48kg entry Dennis McCann beat Nathan Rich (The Factory) in two rounds, while Bill Oliphant beat Sam Nuttall (Tichfield) at 52kg.

Adan Mohammed sparkled in beating Tyler Halliwell (Wiseman) at 54kg, but Welsh 57kg entry Jamie Janes took a split verdict over Joseph Inman.

In Class B contests Joel Bannon beat Harley Griffiths (Cwmavon Hornets) at 60kg, but there were exits for John Cole and Rakim Tatou.

Repton’s talented Class C 56kg entry Shiloh Defreitas defeated Callum Smith (Trowbridge).

Lansbury’s Terry Conroy moved through to the Class C 75kg final by beating Welsh opponent Josh Atko on a unanimous verdict.

Former Schools’ finalist Conroy booked his place in the Youth final with a commanding display against a strong rival.

*East London light-heavyweights Tom Baker and Anthony Yarde should be in the crowd in Manchester on Saturday when Frank Buglioni challenges Hosea Burton for his British title.

Baker, trained by Mark Tibbs at the Peacock gym, and big puncher Yarde, coached by Tunde Ajayi, look the obvious rivals for the winner of Saturday’s title clash.

English champion Baker is a former Repton clubmate of challenger Buglioni, who was also trained by Tibbs for his early pro fights, and their past connection certainly spices up a possible showdown duel

Baker said: “Frank was my main sparring partner so I know the ins and outs of him, like he does with me. Since I have grown and come on loads he probably thinks he could beat me and I know I could beat him.

“We are good friends and if we could pick we would not not fight each other, but it is a business and if we need to fight, we will.”

However, rated just one place behind Manchester’s Burton – and above Buglioni and Baker – is hot prospect Yarde, who has won nine fights, including eight by stoppages and will be hunting for titles in 2017.

Unbeaten Burton is a 3-1 on favourite to defend his title against Buglioni, but the winner can certainly expect testing challenges ahead.

The Eddie Hearn bill, topped by Anthony Joshua’s IBF heavyweight world title defence against American Eric Molina, features six title fights and will be screened on the Sky Box Office pay per view channel.

The action includes a British heavyweight title showdown between Tibbs-trained Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora, who have been swapping insults in the build-up.

Conor Benn, son of two-weight world champion Nigel, looks for his sixth straight pro victory on the bill that also features Scott Quigg, Callum Smith and Ireland’s Katie Taylor.

*Bethnal Green lightweight Jamie Arlain slammed his way to a f fifth straight victory when halting Hayes rival Andrew Joicey in two rounds at York Hall on Saturday.

Arlain landed a powerful left hook to score his first stoppage win in his Southern Area title eliminator, having outpointed Joicey in an earlier bout.
