A BLISTERING innings from Delrick Adikari led Island Community Cricket club to a five-wicket win over local rivals Victoria Park Juniors in the opening match of the Victoria Park Community League's Super Sevens round.

Adikari smashed 45 off just 22 balls as Island overhauled Victoria Park's total of 119 with more than two overs to spare and made the perfect start in Division One.

"This sets us up well to go one better than last season's runners-up place" said Island captain Mo Rahman.

"We struggled to qualify for Division One this season, but having done it by the skin of our teeth, we now aim to take full advantage in the second half of the season."

Victoria Park entered the match struggling for runs but they made a positive start to their innings as Jamshaid Mirza split the field with a wide variety of attacking shots on his way to an unbeaten half century.

Joe Fisher added a valuable 19 in a solid partnership of 55, but when Mirza retired and Fisher was dismissed by Tanjeem Chowdhury, Island were left with two new batsmen at the crease.

Middle order batsmen James Panton and Joe Laurie stood firm but Island were able to slow the scoring rate and Victoria Park closed on 119-2.

Island made a flying start in reply, plundering 20 runs from the first two overs.

But openers Chowdhury and Rahman fell in quick succession as Mirza and Bruno Gonta struck for Victoria Park to leave the match finely poised with the score on 49-2.

Adikari arrived at the crease intent on attacking and his assault on the Victoria Park bowlers produced nine boundaries in an unbeaten 45, while Dheraj Shamoo scored 26 from 20 balls as Island reached 121-2 with 17 balls remaining.
