TOWER Hamlets has been chosen as one of five venues staging a MCC Spirit of Cricket summer camp, nationally, next month.

The three day cricket camp will be held in Victoria Park and will be hosted by the England womens World Cup-winning skipper Charlotte Edwards, who will be making her second visit to the area of recent weeks.

The camp will be held between August 12 and 14 and sessions will be run from 10am-4pm. The cost will £15 per child and is open to youngsters (both boys and girls) between eight and 12 years old.

Charlotte Edwards will be joined by fellow World Cup winner Ebony Rainford-Brent and a top male professional who will be provided by the Professional Cricketers' Association, yet to be announced.

For Charlotte it will be her second visit to the area in as many months. She and England Test opener Alastair Cook, from Essex, were at the Mossbourne Academy, in nearby Hackney, just over a month ago for a Chance to Shine project, a campaign by the Cricket Foundation to regenerate competitive cricket in state schools.

Says the MCC's assistant secretary John Stephenson, the former Hampshire and Essex all-rounder: "These summer camps are a fantastic opportunity for kids. They can play competitive cricket and learn from top MCC coaches and professional players.

"We are keen to have children interested from an early age.

"The Ashes Series is gripping the nation at the moment, we might just unearth the next Freddie Flintoff in a place like Tower Hamlets.''

Places at the camp can be booked on line at www.chancetoshop.co.uk/mccsummercamps or by calling their helpline on 01937-830812.
