Essex lost the second of their three warm-up matches in Barbados ahead of their champions clash with the MCC next week.

They had seen their opening fixture curtailed by bad light, with the Barbados Cricket Association XI on 184-7 in reply to Essex’s 207-6, in which Tom Westley retired out on 61.

Callum Taylor took three wickets, with Sam Cook, Aaron Beard, Aron Nijjar and young Jack Plom also having success with the ball in the first match.

And there were early wickets for Plom, Nijjar and Matt Dixon at Windward CC, as Barbados reached 69-3 after 17 overs.

All three Essex bowlers picked up second wickets later in the innings, with Beard and Ashar Zaidi also chipping in, to leave Barbados 170-8 with 10 overs remaining.

And they eventually closed on 255-8 from their 50 overs, as Kenroy Williams (43 not out) and Dominic Drakes (46 not out) scored quickly late on.

Nijjar (2-38), Plom and Dixon (both 2-56) took the bowling honours for Essex, who saw Nick Browne, celebrating his 27th birthday, fall cheaply in reply and Varun Chopra follow after hitting 24.

Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster shared the highest parternship of the match (60 runs), with the captain going on to reach a half-century from 80 balls with two sixes and six fours before succumbing next ball.

Young Feroze Khushi, 18, looked good on his way to retiring out on 29 from 56 balls, before Foster also retired out on 38.

And Ashar Zaidi found the boundary frequently in his unbeaten 38 off 27 balls as Essex came up short on 226-4.

All eyes now turn to the day-night match against the MCC at the Kensington Oval, which starts on Tuesday at 6.30pm GMT.
