Essex head coach Anthony McGrath was disappointed to see most of the final session of their second day against Lancashire fall victim to a heavy rain shower on Sunday.

Having dismissed the hosts for 301 at the start of the day, with Simon Harmer claiming his third wicket of the innings, the champions recovered from a mini collapse to 130-5 to reach 221-6 five minutes after tea.

Alastair Cook (58) and Tom Westley (41) put on 110 for the second wicket, before falling in quick succession as the visitors wobbled, with captain Ryan ten Doeschate (43) and Adam Wheater (31 not out) adding 81 before the skipper was run out.

McGrath said: “It’s been an absorbing game, and we were disappointed when the rain came. Adam Wheater was batting well.

“It was disappointing the way the partnership between ‘Tendo’ and Wheater came to an end in the manner it did. But that’s cricket.

“We looked to have recovered well after the early loss of Varun Chopra, but then those quick wickets in the afternoon put us on the back foot.

“The first target is to get the 300 and then it’s parity. It’s game on from there. There’s a lot of cricket left in this game.”

Lancashire seamer Joe Mennie took 3-40 for the home side and added: “It wasn’t ideal yesterday morning with the bat. We’d have liked to have done a bit better there. But the boys showed real fight. Jordan Clark and Shiv (Chanderpaul) batted really well, and obviously Graham Onions at the end.

“Then, we started well with the new ball and then went a bit both sides of the wicket. They got a good partnership together before lunch.

“But we hit our areas a bit better after lunch and set the game up pretty nicely. It’s at a delicate stage, but it was a good day overall for us.

“Ideally, we want to take four quick wickets in the morning and get a bit of a lead.”

Mennis had Cook caught by Dane Vilas and also dismissed Westley and Ravi Bopara as Essex lost four wickets for just 11 runs.

He added: “He played and missed at a few and we dropped him early doors, so I thought he was in for a big one.

“But to get him out when he’d set himself and was looking pretty dangerous is a big confidence booster for me.”
