Stratford Cricket Club set out with a win

The journey for the newly established Stratford Cricket Club has commenced, with a Twenty20 under 18s Cricket Match against Newham Cricket Club at Flanders Field in the Essex T20 Cup.

The formation of the new club is based on partnership work from Essex Cricket Board, National Cricket League, Street Chance, Capital Kids Cricket and NewVIc College and others.

To select a side, National Cricket League’s Secretary Sajid Patel selected players from Street Chance and Capital Kids Cricket with the information of players given by Shahidul Alam Ratan (Captital Kid Cricket), Donavan Miller and Manish Patel (Street Chance) in the aims to work with the two bulk groups to start off with, as players knowing each other and getting to know one another in building the base of the team.

The chemistry worked well as Sajid nominated a captain from one group and a vice-captain from the other group to be able to coordinate with one another and with the information given, set a batting order along with strategies and game plans.

And so, the stage was set on Tuesday. Sajid was leading the side and with many challenges ahead as he had never met these players or even seen them play before.

Stratford CC won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 165 for seven in 20 overs of their first innings. Hassan Ahmed (39), Rafill Hussain (17) and Khalil Khan exploding on the scene with 61 runs off 31 balls.

In reply, Newham CC had a great start on the chase, and in the first 10 overs they were 89 for two. But Stratford had three spinners with two taking wickets Saadiq Kullah (3), Khalil Khan (2), and medium-fast bowler Shafi Kullah (2), with fantastic support from the field taking catches to restrict Newham CC to 139 all out in 19.2 overs.

Stratford Cricket Club won the match by 26 runs.

For the players to play together for the first time, not having a single training session together, it was indeed a fantastic effort from the boys and it’s great to see the unity of the players continued to grow.
