ISLAND community cricket club recorded their first league victory of the season last week with a convincing 17-run defeat of New Boys at Victoria Park.

Batting first, Island lost opener Delrick Akidari to the second ball of the opening over before 18-year-old veterans Robert Jones and Tanjeem Chowdhury put on 40 in the next five overs to steady the ship.

Two more wickets fell in successive balls when Jones departed for 14 and and Ravi Ramnuja was bowled for a duck, but Dammika Silva joined Chowdhury and the pair added another 111 runs in 10 overs.

Tanjeem retired on 50 not out off just 29 balls and Dammika was unbeaten on 39 from 24 balls as New Boys were set an imposing total of 160 to win.

Some quick fielding by Sam Dowsett saw Island claim an early breakthrough with a run-out, and two wickets each from Silva and Chowdhury late on saw New Boys close on 142-5 as Island sealed a 17-run victory.
