Newham College held off Leyton Sixth Form in a high-scoring slugfest in the fourth week of the Essex County Board FE “Chance to Shine” tournament at UEL SportsDock.

Newham won the toss and got off to a flyer as Hamza Omar raced away to 25 runs from 19 deliveries and opening partner Mujakkir Hussain struck 18 runs before being out obstructing the field.

But Zeeshan Khan was the star of the match, slogging 25 runs off a mere nine balls, with a strike rate of 278.

Muhammad Rahim (14) and Fasil Fajarul (6) came in at the end and led Newham to a total of 115.

And Khan was again at the forefront to start the Leyton innings, as he ran out Ummar Ibrahim for just four runs.

Sohaib Kayani (28) and Hassan Ali (15) put Leyton’s run chase right back on target, with Zain Haidrey smashing 19 off seven deliveries before he was stumped by Fajarul.

Mohammed Ismaeel and Arsh Sheikh brought Leyton close and they were left needing 14 from the final over.

Newham bowler Tariz Jan allowed 11 runs from five deliveries as it all came down to the final ball, with Leyton needing three runs.

But Jan held his nerve and produced a brilliant dot ball to end the match and seal a two-run win for Newham.
