Essex batsman Dan Lawrence admitted it had been a frustrating summer after hitting his first County Championship century in nearly a year against Hampshire on Thursday.

Lawrence finished unbeaten on 114 as the defending champions closed on 363-6 at Chelmsford, where Varun Chopra (61), Ryan ten Doeschate (55) and Adam Wheater (52) also made half-centuries.

And Lawrence said: “It’s been a massively frustrating time. I do pride myself on getting in and getting hundreds.

“I’ve had a few starts this year where I probably should have kicked on and got a couple of biggies. But thankfully today was my day.

“To be honest I don’t want to look too far ahead. I’ll just look to tomorrow and try and get as many as I can.

“As the games go on hopefully we’ll find some more good wickets and I can score some more runs. The most importantly thing is for the team to win and hopefully I can help them do that.”

Having lost the whole first day’s play due to wet weather, Essex slipped from 116-1 to 124-4 before Lawrence put on 122 with ten Doeschate and 105 with Wheater.

He added: “We obviously, as a collective batting group, haven’t batted particularly well this year. Mags [Anthony McGrath] has been brilliant with us sticking with his players who he knows have done it before. He was very confident we would do it again.

“It was a really good collective effort and it was nice for me to get in and finally get a big score.

“It’s also nice when you get in that situation with Tendo because he always plays really aggressively and counter-attacks when you get into those situations.

“They went through a period where they bowled outstandingly well, (Kyle) Abbott particularly. We managed to build a fifty partnership really quickly and before he knew it we had put on a hundred and there was a really good foundation set for the rest of our batters to come in and finish the job off.

“It’s nice to be in a position where we can be ultra-aggressive with the ball. It’s great for our bowlers to finally have a score to bowl at. We got what we deserved for all the hard work we’ve put in and thankfully the runs came.”
