Essex head coach Anthony McGrath admitted his side had produced their ‘worst performance’ of this season’s Vitality Blast T20 competition after a 10-wicket loss at Somerset on Friday night.

Varun Chopra (43) top scored in their 135-9 at Taunton, before Johann Myburgh’s unbeaten 103 off just 44 balls steered the hosts to their target in 11.2 overs.

A fifth defeat in eight matches leaves Essex at the foot of the south group table, with a home match against Surrey up next on Sunday, and McGrath said: “We were very poor. It was the worst we have played in the competition.

“We never turned up for the game at all. We were well below par with the bat and with the ball as well.

“You have to give credit to Johann Myburgh and the way that Somerset chased it down, but our score was never going to be enough.

“It boils down to the basics and we just haven’t got it right in this competition. With six games left we have got to turn round quickly and focus on winning all six.”

Myburgh added: “I thoroughly enjoyed my innings after all our bowlers did tremendously well for us earlier.

“This meant going out there chasing a lowish score gave us a bit of freedom at the top of the innings and you know if you get off to a good start then you can wrap the game up quite quickly. That was my mind-set.

“I hit the ball well in the middle of the bat and it went where I wanted it to most of the time. When you take risks and it happens for you it’s a great feeling.”
