Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate praised his side after a dominant first day against Worcestershire in the County Championship.

Jamie Porter claimed career-best figures of 7-41 as the visitors were skittled for just 94, before the 2017 champions reached 252-5 after half-centuries from Murali Vijay (85) and Tom Westley (55), with Ravi Bopara unbeaten on 36 overnight.

And a delighted ten Doeschate said: “It has been a very successful day. The bowling probably hasn’t been up to the levels the guys set themselves recently but ‘Ports’ got it right from the first ball and made the most of some useful conditions.

“To bowl them out for under 100 and then Vijay, Westley and Bopara have put us into a good position, but there is still more to work to do.

“With the new ball it did a bit but it was more about putting the ball in the right area. I think Porter has now gone past 50 wickets and he’s only played eight games, so that is a good return.

“I don’t think Jamie would mind me saying he hasn’t bowled that well in the last couple of weeks, but he was back to his best.

“He isn’t feeling particularly well, he has some food poisoning. He made the strikes early which helps a lot when you aren’t feeling too well.”

Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell added: “We were pretty unanimous about batting first. We spoke to the coaches and thought it was going to spin.

“In hindsight it is probably not the wisest decision we’ve ever made. We always thought it was going to be a tough opening hour.

“As days go I don’t think they come much worse than that. We are currently miles behind the game but we have to show some fight and fight our way out of it.

“We don’t like to make excuses and we wouldn’t want to blame the Vitality Blast for that. If anything on the back of that you’d think we’d be on a high and that would lift us.

“There were balls we possibly could have kept out and the run out doesn’t help either and we certainly could have played better. But credit to Essex, they bowled well.”
