Wanstead batsman impresses in second-team victory
Wanstead’s Kishen Velani hit a fine hundred, while Paul Walter, Will Buttleman and Rishi Patel also impressed with the bat as Essex 2nd XI comfortably beat Norfolk in a 50-over friendly at Frinton-on-Sea.
Put into bat by the visitors, Essex saw tall left-hander Walter and Brentwood youngster Patel score 56 runs in the first 10 overs.
And the opening pair had moved their partnership along to 88, before Patel picked out mid-on and departed for 39.
Callum Taylor was run out at the non-striker’s end when backing up, but Walter went on to reach 77, playing nicely on the off side, before he was trapped lbw with the score on 154.
Feroze Khushi was also trapped lbw for nine to leave Essex 189-4, but Velani and Buttleman then shared a century stand for the fifth wicket.
Velani hit three successive fours in one over and brought up his half-century with two more successive boundaries in the 39th over.
And after hitting one straight six, Velani saw Buttleman produce a scoop over the wicketkeeper’s head for another six in the 45th over, before reaching three figures with a four through mid-wicket.
Velani dragged the next ball on to his own stumps to depart for 101 and Brentwood youngster Buttleman was bowled around his legs for 44 in the penultimate over with the score on 321, before Essex closed on 335-6.
It was a mountainous task for Norfolk and they were never in the hunt in reply, as Matt Dixon (3-23) and Matt Quinn (3-26) combined with the ball to good effect.
The visitors were eventually dismissed for 134 in the 34th over to leave Essex winners by a mammoth 201-run margin ahead of another friendly against Bedfordshire at Bedford on Thursday.
