The University of East London’s men’s cricket team produced a stunning display in their latest BUCS League fixture this week.

Having defeated Essex in the first match of the outdoor season, they host Greenwich at Wanstead’s Nutter Lane ground.

And after captain Ali Wood won the toss and chose to bat first, UEL amassed a whopping 580-6 in 50 overs.

Wood and opening partner Mark Barrell both scored 121, with the skipper hitting four sixes and 17 fours while Barrell cleared the rope eight times and struck 12 other boundaries.

Number three Sam Foster also reached three figures, with two sixes and 13 fours, and there were contributions from David Booth (67), Neil Castro (55) and Haroon Qadoos (47).

Greenwich collapsed to 94 all out in reply after Ahmed Butt took six wickets, including three in four balls.

Wood said: “As you can imagine, I am delighted!

“I’m struggling to put the result into words. It was a phenomenal performance by the whole team.

“I’m delighted with the players who came in and scored runs and was equally impressed with how we bowled.
“580 is a mammoth score, but Greenwich were not as bad as the result shows.

“We just played brilliantly on the day on a flat deck for another convincing victory.

“I will be asking the squad to go out and do it all over again next Wednesday against Kingston University.”
