Davis Cup champions drop in at Lee Valley

Murray and Co visit wheelchair tennis event

Andy Murray and his triumphant Great Britain Davis Cup team-mates visited the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters event at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Tuesday.

Murray and the team met British wheelchair players Lucy Shuker, Andy Lapthorne, Jordanne Whiley and Gordon Reid, all of whom have qualified for the elite season-ending wheelchair tennis tournament.

The NEC Wheelchair Masters began yesterday (Wednesday) and runs through until Sunday and Murray later tweeted to wish Lapthorne and Whiley good luck at the Masters.

He said: “The level of wheelchair tennis is fantastic. I speak to a lot of the wheelchair players in the locker room. When I lost early at the US Open this year I watched Gordon Reid play there and the level is very, very high from what I’ve seen.

“Great Britain are very good at it as well. We’ve got some fantastic wheelchair players.”

British wheelchair tennis player Reid said: “To see players from your country achieving success at any level is always inspiring. I’m actually going to claim credit for their win because we won the wheelchair version of the Davis Cup this year so I think they were inspired by us!”
