Captain draws positives on comeback at Oxford

London Raiders captain Tom Davis was delighted to see his side fight back for a share of the spoils against Oxford in their final match of the National League regular season.

Raiders had slumped to a 3-0 home defeat against Streatham in Lee Valley on Saturday and looked set for another loss as they trailed the Stars 4-1 in the university city.

But Davis netted a quickfire double to give them hope and Alan Lack levelled with just 11 seconds left on the clock, after goalie Euan King had been replaced with an extra skater.

Davis said: “Saturday’s game against Streatham I don’t feel we really found form and we struggled to get going from the start.

“Against a team like Streatham that’s always going to be a hard night at the office. In my eyes if ‘Kinger’ hadn’t played so well it could have been more.

“Sunday’s game was a lot better start. We came out flying and playing the way we should.”

Oxford took the lead inside 30 seconds through Jesse Lye, but Lack squared matters before the first break, only for Oxford to score three unanswered goals in the middle period.

Davis added: “We feel asleep for a bit in the second and was punished for it, going 4-1 down. But words were said at the end of the period and for the third we came out like any winning team should.

“Everything came together and we all played as a unit and that’s why we pulled the game back to 4-4. It was a great feeling to be honest and we’ve found a bit of form before play-offs.”

Having finished the season in fifth place, Raiders will now face Oxford in the first round of the play-offs on the weekend of March 25-26.

And Davis knows what they need to do over the course of the two legs to advance to the semi-finals a week later, adding: “We have a weekend off to prepare for the opening weekend of the play-offs the following week.

“We proved on Sunday we can compete with Oxford and we are the better team on our day, but if we don’t turn up we will get punished so we all know we have to turn up for 120 minutes and play.”
